2008-06-29 Understanding the voice

Note: article about the song You Are The Voice - with a minor comments of mine between brackets - the only part where this otherwise nice written piece gets way off the mark.

clash of the bull and the frog: understanding the voice
Especially for a song that has spawned numerous versions in different generation, You’re the Voice is one veritable piece. Written by Andy Qunta, Mitchel Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson 80’s, this single is a hit in some countries such as Australia and even European nations, but not forceful enough that it gains the attention of the Americans. (...).

Nothing beats the original but other versions of You’re the Voice can stand on their own. David Archuleta’s is one passable edition, in our opinion. With the Heart band, the spunk and energy of John Farnham is still present, except that it was presented by a woman. Shown in the video, though, differs because it focuses on poverty and war issues, unlike Farnham’s which presented dysfunctional parents ranting off right in front of their child.

With the Heart’s rendition, the song shows how versatile it is as being androgynous. This flexibility also proves that the song is not only limited to the masculine mindset because another singer, Rebecca St. James, rendered it with her very own semi-rock style of singing. Though she’s not much of an original [HEY - okay, we have to cut off where it is becoming stupid... but you can always visit the original page to read that of course. I've never heard of a better version than Rebecca's - only the original comes close. ...What? If I'm an rsj-fan? What makes you think that?].

The song is a classic—especially the one by John Farnham. As a literary piece, You’re the Voice is very mundanely austere but realistic. It is encouraging its audience (or listeners) to make the world a better place. It may fall as a cliché but its message is encompassing and full of truth that being trite is not an issue. It doesn’t make use of any complex words yet it effectively delivers the message across with such unexplainable uniqueness. If this were to be a poem, the persona is just expressing the urgency to fight against what’s wrong in society.

The song can fit in any generation. It has been proven by the many versions of the song by various artists in different periods in time. There aren’t just four versions of the song, but among the four, the music video by Heart was the loudest. It showed the suffering of people due to war and poverty. It evokes pity from its viewers. We appreciate the song because, aside from its catchy tune, its message is simple and clear. It is universal. It has the voice of everyone.

2008-06-14 Truth will set you free

Pinay Devotions: Truth Will Set You Free
We celebrated our Philippine Independence Day last June 12. We celebrate freedom from Spanish rule. In many ways gaining our freedom, whether it be independence from a conqueror, the right to vote, the right to choose who you will marry and the right to equality in the workforce is a triumph over bondage.

In the book written by Rebecca St. James and Lynda Hunter Bjorklund entitled, SHE: Safe Healthy Empowered they gave us ten questions to ask ourselves to gauge if we are truly free from the bondage that keeps us from experiencing the best life God has for us. For today's reflection, let's go over these questions.

1. Do you struggle to let go of the past?

2. Do you have trouble forgiving others, yourself or God for certain things that have happened to you?

3. Do you fear what might happen in the future?

4. Do your goals, possessions or relationships leave you wanting but never finding contentment?

5. Do you allow one or more habits to control you?

6. Do you ever lie or cheat?

7. Do you often feel sad or depressed?

8. Do you stay busy so you won't have to deal with hard issues?

9. Do you resist quietness and alone time?

10. Do you get mad easily?

If you answered "Yes" to any one of these questions, you may not be as free as you think. Try and reflect on your problem areas and what is causing them. Then reflect on Jesus' words.

"You will know the truth and the truth will set you free... If the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free." - John 8:32,36

2008-06-01 SHE Event, Hannah Montana, ...

Life is a Highway...in "Voke"ville: The SHE Event...&...Happy Anniversary, Baby Cakes!
WOW! Last night I was blessed to be able to go see Rebecca St. James and Evie Karlsson in Lansing. (...)

What we went to was called "The SHE Event": Safe, Healthy, & Empowered- A special mother, daughter and friends event. There were women of all ages...tiny babies through great grammies. You could just see the estrogen flowing! :+)

Both women (Rebecca and Evie) were very dynamic. I was especially moved my Rebecca St. James and her call to purity and modesty for all single women and girls. Since there were so many young girls there, I pray that they were moved, too. At one point, they turned the lights on and opened up the floor for a Q&A session. One mother in particular expressed her graditude for Rebecca being such a great role model for girls and asked her to address the "Hannah Montana" craze. For those of you living on planet Mars (or maybe you don't have younger girls), Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus is the daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. Rebecca's first words were "Pray for her. Pray for her. Pray for her. She needs massive prayer". She then went on to say that the Cyrus family attends the same church that her family does in Nashville and so she does know the family to be "dedicated believers who love the Lord" but that Miley in an industry that is full of lies and deceit...Satan's forte. She also said that often times, Miley feels very lonely because there aren't many children her age that can relate to her level of stardom. I imagine she has a hard time leaving her house with much peace and quiet.

So, I encourage you, with your Hannah Montana crazed daughters, to pray for this precious young soul together. And lift her up so that she "may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" Ephesians 6:11.

2008-05-29 High school ladies compete for scholarships

St. Clair Times - High school ladies compete for scholarships
The 2009 St. Clair County Jr. Miss program will be held June 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Springville Middle School. Six young ladies from across St. Clair County are competing in the event.

The six contestants are Chelsea Ellis, Casi Crews, Mary Beth Harrison, Alisha Edwards, Kelsey Adams and Ann-Marie Riley.

(...) Riley's sister is friends with the reigning St. Clair County Jr. Miss Laura Hornsby. That's how she found out about Jr. Miss.

Her life statement is, Jeremiah 29:11-13 says, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope in the future. Then you will call upon Me and I will listen to you. Then you will seek Me with all your heart." That means when I seek God with all my heart, He will reveal himself to me.

For her talent, Riley will be signing Song of Love by Rebecca St. James.

2008-05-26 A GRAND Grand Opening at Clarksville, TN

Hilldale's Worship Ministry: A GRAND Grand Opening
(...) the highlight of the evening was Rebecca St. James. She not only sang some of her songs with her awesome band and backup brothers, but she sang several of the songs we sing in worship like "Here I Am to Worship", "Blessed Be Your Name", "Forever" and more. It was a great evening.

(...) And did you notice that Rebecca called up to the stage all of the 5 - 20 year olds? I kept waiting for her to say, "OK, now all of you 40-60 year olds, come on up here I've got a great song just for you." Nooooo, it never happened. I was a little disappointed, but I'm over it now. :-)
The Harrison Family: Sunday
Sunday was the Grand Opening to Mr. Mike's church Family Life Center and the Rebecca St. James concert. It was a lot of fun. They had moon bounces for the kids then the concert. I think everyone even Ava Grace enjoyed the concert.

Christian Music Videos: Rebecca St. James
Rebecca was born on July 26, 1977 in Sydney, Australia. (...)

Note: Okay, you knew that already. This is just to notify you that the Christian Music Videos webblog now has a Rebecca St James page too, and some videos of course. The content is, at least for now, taken from my hompage but that was granted. I 'complained' about not seeing a RSJ section there and only a few days later this terrible omission was taken care of. Not really new videos here, but that's not the purpose of the site: this is about getting an overview of Christian Music. It is a work under construction, hopefully they will go on with it and add all the greatest Christian bands.

2008-05-09 Taking a few moments to honor everyone

John is Waiting For His Princess!: Taking a few moments to honor everyone
You all should check out my friend Rebecca St. James' Web site from time to time. Man, I want to honor her. She often has something encouraging to say about life in God.

She's apparently re-releasing her book, "Wait for Me," in the near future. Is everyone else asking the same question I'm asking?

How in the world is this girl still single? Here is a committed, consistent, successful, bright, beautiful, romantic woman of God. Are all the single men around her completely lost? Either that, or their standards are way too high.

Personal note: Apart from the apparent mistake in the last sentence (I would rather suggest that Rebecca's standards might probably be too high), I would certainly agree with the question how in the world could Rebecca still be single. I've always thought that the question is not so much "who would want Rebecca" but: how could a Christian guy who is not yet married or engaged, not want Rebecca? That would certainly be beyond my comprehension. From my viewpoint - be it far, far away from Tennessee - only cart loads of Christians is what I can imagine at her doorstep day after day.

2008-05-09 Helping youth balance passion, purity

Wapakoneta Daily News - Helping youth balance passion, purity
Even members of the media and popular culture are vocalizing their own views to sexual purity. Singers such as Natalie LaRue and Rebecca St. James wrote songs with lyrics describing their commitments to remain faithful to their future husbands while single, and American Idol winner Jordan Sparks wears a promise ring.
“It’s a pretty big deal to me,” Sparks said last month during an interview with a Lima-area radio station.
Katy Jackson, the youth group director at St. Paul United Church of Christ, said youth leaders such as herself and other church leaders can also help teens understand from where the idea of remaining sexually pure comes.
“It seems to be becoming more and more acceptable to be sexually active before marriage,” Jackson said.
While she attributed this mindset to culture and values perpetuated by the media, she also said the effects of a changing culture on the family structure also has an impact, leaving parents less involved in their teens’ lives.
“Parents have a bigger influence on their kids than they think,” Jackson said.
While parents can help facilitate conversation with their teens simply by being open about their thoughts — and even their mistakes — about relationships with their children, Jackson said it is also important for church influences such as herself not only to share the biblical stance on sexual purity, but also the reasoning behind that stance.
“The church says you shouldn’t have sex outside of marriage, period,” Jackson said. “I think they could do better with explaining why that is instead of just saying ‘you shouldn’t do that.’ That really turns people off.”

keeping up with the keith's: They're back!!!
We then went to the She Event, which was a Rebecca St. James concert. Evie was there which brought back memories of being in my carebear jammies with my brush singing to her record "i'm only 4 feet 11 and I'm going to heaven and it makes me feel ten feet tall" - blast from the past! It was fun!

2008-04-29 I want to see YOU face to face... (moving post while listening to rsj)

ä¿¡é ¼ : I want to see YOU face to face..
I sometimes want to see God (face to face) and ask Him some personal questions. I want to know what He wants me to learn. I want to know how to let go of some things in life. I know I told God that I won't ask of Him a particular thing. I gave it up weeks ago. It still hurts. It'd be a lie if I say it doesn't hurt. I may not feel the pain in my heart, but it hurts somewhere else. I am fine with that. Heart-san has been hurt a lot and I don't want him to take any more pain. It's not healthy for him.

I've always wanted to have something to make me forget it. But it's not easy. I even sometimes feel that something's getting stronger. Too bad, I can't express enough so I have to show it somewhere else. I am actually trying to think of a proper term for it. It is either sublimation or displacement without the negative attribute.

Father in heaven, if it is Your will, I want to
see Core soon. If it pleases You, please allow me to have Core. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

2008-04-28 Music and Fighting Malaria

Mission Network News
Music was a life-saver last week at a concert for Gospel Music Association Music Week. With the help of Rebecca St. James, a Christian music artist, $6,000 dollars was raised in one offering at the event.

That money went into the Malaria Intervention Fund which will allow Compassion International to provide mosquito nets, insecticide for homes, education on malaria prevention, and medical care for those already infected with malaria. Through their work, they seek to help children become healthy Christian adults by sharing Christ's love in all they do. By relieving physical ailments, they can more effectively present the Gospel.

The small bite of a mosquito causes at least one million deaths from malaria every year. As many as 75 percent of those are children under the age of five, especially in sub-Sahara Africa. Death aside, almost everyone in Africa has a malaria episode at least once a year. It causes fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and general pain and can even cause comas or brain damage.

St. James is also hosting a 30-minute radio special called "Malaria: Plague of the Poor." It describes the disease and its effects and how Compassion International is helping.

April 25 was World Malaria Day, a day to highlight the successes and challenges in the fight against the preventable disease. Find out five things you can do to help this cause.

2008-04-28 This year's Fishfest not quite praiseworthy

Entertainment: This year's Fishfest not quite praiseworthy | fishfest, year, camp, stage, christian - OCRegister.com
Review: The annual festival of contemporary Christian music in Irvine doesn't have as strong a lineup as previous versions

Meanwhile, veteran CCM artist Rebecca St. James spent much of her time performing worship songs. She has a strong voice and showed it off on songs like "Wait for Me," and her set was louder than expected. However, like Camp, she didn't do anything truly remarkable or original, offering little evidence as to her co-headliner status.

Still, she was a lot better than John Tesh, who was easily Fishfest's lowest point. Combining both worship and instrumental material, he fell short across the board.

Note: well, anyway: I wished I was there!

Collaborations and inspiration were the theme at the second night of showcases at GMA Music Week 2008. Christian music pioneer Michael W. Smith brought along some new friends this year for his night of Sunday worship, adding the vibrant Israel Houghton and American Idol contestant Mandisa to the lineup. Rolling out such anthems as “Shout to the Lord,” “Let It Rain,” and “Mighty to Save” the group brought a message of surrender and worship into the packed Ryman Auditorium. Guest Rebecca St. James was also on hand to preside for a special Compassion International offering, which earned over $6,000 at the night’s beginning to help purchase mosquito nets for needy African families.

Rebecca St. James: The Ultimate Collection
Artist: Rebecca St. James
Label: ForeFront Records (www.forefrontrecords.com)
Length: Disc 1 – 13 tracks/53:45 minutes, Disc 2 – 12 tracks/48:15 minutes

Rebecca St. James has the heart of a disciple. It’s reflected in God-centered lyrics and modern music with an edge. It’s this combination of passion for God and artistic integrity that make her a continual favorite with fans.

This 2-CD set provides a comprehensive collection of her best material. This includes "Lion," part of the inspired by soundtrack for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, "America," the theme song for the 2005 National Day of Prayer, and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," from WOW Christmas. Another bonus is "Expressions of Your Love," a duet with Chris Tomlin. Older songs like "Pray" and "God" hold up well with their raw energy and rock. "Yes, I Believe in God" and "Here I Am" are inspired songs of commitment.

2008-04-09 Old album review: Devotion (The Newsboys)

Some Old Music Reviews « Cavman Considers
Devotion by the Newsboys- I expected this to be Adoration Part 2. At first I was disappointed. But I am disappointed no more. This disc is a great hybrid of Thrive and Adoration. 3 songs are by others (Blessed be Your Name, Name Above All Names & When the Tears Fall). Their version of the Matt Redman song, Blessed be Your Name, features help by Rebecca St. James. It is spunkier than other others. Taking a cue from Job, it deals with the commitment to praise God even when life is difficult. Other songs of longing are The Orphan and Landslide of Love. They put forth a ‘real-world’ Christianity. God of Nations, Name Above All Names, and Strong Tower direct our devotion to our God. This is an encouraging and enjoyable collection of songs. There are plenty of stick-in-your head lyrics, and some kickin’ music.

2008-04-11 Book: Loved; looking for stories

Following Austen: Loved: looking for stories
I'm one of several writers working on a new book project, a book called Loved with Christian recording artist Rebecca St. James. The book is based on a song ("You Are Loved") Rebecca wrote for a friend who turned to drugs and away from the church, and will tell stories of young women who left their faith and rediscovered the love of Christ. This is a book of encouragement and hope. It says, "No matter where you've been or what you've done... you are loved."

Do you have a story like this that you'd like to share, or do you know someone who might? I would love to interview you (in person if you're in the DC area, by phone if you're not.) Simply post a comment here with your contact information, or email me at LElizabethSmith AT gmail DOT com. (I'll handle all the writing, so no worries if you're not a writer.)

The stories may be dramatic or very simple; the women featured may be modern-day, they may be young women still, they may be older now; I'm hoping to throw in one or two historical pieces as well. (Just a note -- there's no payment for stories, but everyone featured will receive a free book.)

Even if you don't know of a story, if you could pass this on to others who might know of one, that would be a huge help.

The book will release through FaithWords in the fall of 2009.

"Without knowledge that we are loved so extravagantly by God, we can't love Him back, we can't live a holy life, we can't trust Him. But when we understand that He loves us – so deeply and so passionately – and that He wants us to live this great adventure with Him – then we can understand who He is and love Him with all we are." -- Rebecca St. James

2008-04-08 Christian Teens Embracing Harder Rock Music

Christian Teens Embracing Harder Rock Music | Christianpost.com
The younger generation of Christians is embracing music with a harder edge, according to a popular magazine for Christian teens that announced in its latest issue its readers' top music choices.

(...) this year, a majority of the 5,000 magazine readers who voted, aged
13 to 18, leaned in favor of hard rock bands bumping down pop and soft
rock groups. The results are published in the April/May issue.

The trend is most evident in the award's Best Vocalist category.

John
Cooper of Skillet won the Best Male Vocalist – a title that
bounced between Jason Dunn (Hawk Nelson), Matt Thiessen (Relient K) and
Jeremy Camp in previous cycles of the awards. Trevor McNevan of
Thousand Foot Krutch placed second.

The Best Female Vocalist
category welcomed its first ever winner from a hard rock band: Lacey
Mosley of Flyleaf. The frontwoman beat out former holders of the title,
Tricia Brock (Superchick) and Alyssa Barlow (BarlowGirl).

(...) Meanwhile, pop artist Rebecca St. James, who placed third in that
category in 2006, moved down to fifth. Any lower than fifth would have
placed her only in the honorable mention list.

2008-03-28 Rebecca St.James: Breathe - by Caxton Muriuki

» Rebecca St.James ; Breathe Ruahflames: a community of like minded bible believing Christians
Rebecca St.James ; Breathe
Posted in March 28th, 2008
by Caxton Muriuki in Devotions, Prayers

Rebecca’s Breathe is a version of the song written by Marrie Barnett. This song has been a real blessing to Ruahflames Radio listeners among other anointed songs. The song calls on us to live lives full of Christ and His presence. We live to breath the Lord, to accept the gift of His presence in our lives.

When you face situations that require to be dealt with, just breathe His Holy presence. (...)

Like David, let us thirst for the presence of the Lord in our lives. Psalms 42:1 As the deer pants for the water brooks,So pants my soul for You, O God. I want to see that kind of testimony in my relationship with the risen Savor.

When we live in His presence, then we enjoy the daily bread. This is manna from above to help us navigate “today’s” challenges. By His daily bread, our Spirits and souls are nourished for eternity, and we are being transformed by the renewing of our minds which is the stronghold of our souls, for eternity. John 6:58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.

We are then desperate for Him, desperate to see Him, touch Him, do His will, love Him and Just enjoy His presence. Christian living becomes enjoyable and natural. We are able to encourage others and to display the attributes of our lord Jesus in our lives. We become truly Christ like and therefore people who have know Christ can call us Christians.

2008-03-14 Desperate for You (moving story from a blogger)

Rain Down on Me: it's my party...
'And I...I'm desperate for You; and I...I'm lost without You'
And the Desperate for You song, by Rebecca St. James. I don't think I'll ever hear that song without thinking of a friend who sang it one Sunday; the same day he fell off the deep end into a whirlpool that cost him nearly everything he had...family, job, home...that day when he sang that song, he meant it, he was desperate - I could just hear it in his heart. I wish I could express how much I wanted to help him, but couldn't; how it hurt to see him hurting, how it hurt to see his family hurting. Even today, when I think of him, or when I hear that beautiful song, I feel such compassion for him...it brings me to tears once again...

Note: The mentioned song is not written by Rebecca St James but by Marie Barnett. But Rebecca's version is probably most remembered by a lot of Christians.

lkyouths: Rescue the Perishing
Here's the contemporary version that is beautifully sung by Rebecca St James [not!]. Enjoy ....
(I've included the other verse from the original hymn in "white")
Note: apparently this blogger has mistaken this song for a Rebecca St James song. But this is not really a surprise, as the voice of Cindy Foote is quite similar to Rebecca's in a couple of ways, and the user who posted this video on youtube is nicknamed RebeccaStJamesRockz. On top of that, a girl sitting on the ground at the beginning of the video is like a perfect Rebecca-lookalike... So there are a lot of great excuses here for the mistake. By the way: when I'd heard the song, I posted it as a hot tip to Rebecca - for her planned praise album. (Rescue The Perishing isn't a praise song strictly speaking, but it is sung as such, and I guess praise could indeed mean much more than we usually understand by it).

After releasing two critically acclaimed discs—Moving on Faith (2004) and Life on the Inside (2006)—and touring alongside nationally known acts like Rebecca St. James and BarlowGirl, Lavik's latest effort represents a considerable change in direction musically and thematically. "It’s definitely a departure from the first two records," he says. "I hope people dig it. It’s not super polished or overly produced, but it’s really raw, acoustic and real."

Lavik says he’s always wanted to do a hymns project, especially since he grew up in a traditional church in the state of Washington where he developed a love and appreciation for the standards of the faith. “I love old hymns,” the 29-year-old troubadour confesses. "For me, this is not about making a strategic career move. I wanted to do it because I have a deep reverence for the songs."

The Bluemont Line » If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something
Rebecca St. James’ 2005 album If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something is pure genius. There are very few albums that I enjoy listening to from start to finish, but this is definitely one of them — all the songs are great.

After listening to Rebecca’s aLive in Florida album (which contains live versions of many of these songs), I was a bit disappointed when I first heard the opening song “God Help Me” on this album. The bass is pretty weak when compared to the live version! There is some synthesizer bass stuff, but the electric bass just isn’t “present” in the mix. So that’s the only problem with the album — the bass track could be turned up a bit on all of the songs, in my opinion.

But that’s easily overlooked due to the awesomeness of Rebecca St. James’ singing and songwriting skills (and the hard-rocking guitar riffs that show up quite frequently).

My favorite song from this album is probably “Shadowlands.” It nicely demonstrates Rebecca’s vocal range. I also enjoy “Alive,” which has a great message about the joy that comes from giving one’s life to God.

Living A Life After David: Wait For Me by Rebecca St James
I have been listening a lot to that song lately and it reminds me of me and T. Almost a decade of friendship and the last time since we've met. It seems that i don't feel connected to him anymore and i just feel like letting go. After listening to that song, i asked God if i should still hold on to him. I am not asking God for an opportunity to be with him just yet. At least not this year. Maybe just a chance to meet him would be a great thing this year. And i should wait, hopefully he'll wait for me too.

2007-12-20 Rebecca St. James to Speak for Compassion Malaria Initiative

Award-Winning Artist Rebecca St. James to Speak for Compassion Malaria Initiative
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO--(Marketwire - December 20, 2007) - Rebecca St. James, a long-time spokesperson and advocate for Compassion International who has been named "Favorite Female Artist" by CCM Magazine for the seventh consecutive year, will host Compassion's newest half-hour radio special, "Malaria: A Plague of the Poor."

The Grammy award-winning Christian artist, who was also voted "Best Female Artist of 2007" by ChristianityToday.com for the fifth consecutive year, is working with Compassion to release the program on April 25, 2008, World Malaria Day, as designated by the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership. Compassion's radio special will feature stories of African families affected by the disease, which kills one million people each year.

"Rebecca St. James is one of the most committed and talented Christian women that I know, and I am so proud of her and her accomplishments," said Dr. Wess Stafford, president of Compassion International. "Compassion is very fortunate to have someone as gifted and dedicated as her to serve as a voice for the poor. Rebecca is one of Compassion's staunchest advocates for children in poverty and I have no doubt she will deliver a message of urgency and hope through Compassion's malaria radio special."

St. James has been a passionate spokesperson for Compassion International for more than a decade. Her work has led to the sponsorship of more than 30,000 of the world's neediest children.

Having performed in more than 30 countries, St. James highlights the work of Compassion during each of her concerts. In fact, her song "Beautiful Stranger" was inspired by her work with Compassion.

After a trip in 2006 to Rwanda to visit her sponsored child, Sam, St. James said, "I saw first-hand once again how funds donated to Compassion are actually reaching and being utilized for good in making a profound difference in the lives of children. It was a powerful experience for me to see the work of Compassion in action and how children are actually being so benefited in everyday life."

On the same trip, she visited a horrific slum in Kenya "that represented the most intense poverty imaginable. In the middle of the desolation, Compassion workers have built a project -- a school filled with wonderfully joyful children who are being given love and hope and the message of Jesus."

Compassion is one of the world's largest Christian child-development organizations, working with more than 65 denominations and more than 4,000 indigenous church partners. It serves more than 900,000 children in Africa, Asia, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Since 1952, Compassion has touched the lives of more than 1.6 million children and has been recognized for its financial integrity with top ratings and recommendations by several of the nation's leading not-for-profit "watchdog" organizations.

For information on how to sponsor a child, visit Compassion online at www.compassion.com or call (800) 336-7676, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST.

2007-12-16 One of Life's Lessons - from Lauren's World (weblog)

Lauren's World: One of Life's Lessons....
I recently read a story in Sister Freaks, by Rebecca St. James, about a girl who found her language a barrier in sharing the word of God. She says, "I am limited, Lord. I can only go so far, and beyond that it's not possible. I need to recognize my limits." But as soon as she prays that prayer, she feels God saying, “It is true. You are really a limited person. You have a great barrier in your way. But [Lauren], do not make your limits My limits, because I don't have them. For Me, there are no barriers... I am the one who makes the difference. You trust more in yourself and in what you can do than in My power. I just need you to be willing.”

2007-12-11 Land of Liberty, Honor God, America! (NRTeam Reviews)

America - The EP by Rebecca St. James | CD Reviews And Information | NewReleaseTuesday.com
Since the age of 16, Rebecca St. James has been writing empowering lyrics for today's teenagers. Now with the digital release of America, Rebecca shares with her fans a beautiful song about the beauty of this country.

The song "America" is one of the most beautiful songs Rebecca has ever recorded. With the pop/rock background flowing behind her vocals, Rebecca chants the words Honor God, America / The Land of the free / Honor God, America / O Land of liberty / Honor God. The song literally left me speechless.

The following track, "I Thank You", which was released on her Greatest Hits album back in Spring 2003, is wonderful addition to this Patriotic EP. Almost as if she's thanking the soldiers for what they've done, Rebecca shines in this vibrant, upbeat song. The EP closer, "Yes, I Believe In God", is another of my favorite RSJ songs. I almost start crying every time she sings the bridge, You said, "If any man comes after Me / He must deny himself, take his cross and follow after Me" / So here I come after You / Knowing when my life I lose / You give Yours in return / You give Your new life in return.

2007-12-10 Rebecca St James on Worship - by Tracy Darlington

TitleTrakk.com: Music: Interviews/Articles: Rebecca St. James, the Worship Revolution & You by Tracy Darlington
(...) if you’ve ever seen Rebecca sing, you’ve already experienced the worshipful atmosphere of her concerts. I caught up with her while she was vacationing in Australia, and even though it was the crack of dawn, she still had some great insights to share on worship and the average American
(...)

“I believe worship is the greatest thing we can do here on earth,” Rebecca says. “It’s our human Christian calling; it’s what we’re created to do. I love worship. There is such a need for it today.”

God created us out of His desire for fellowship. He wants us to choose to worship Him. “He didn’t make us robots,” Rebecca continues. “He gave us a choice. Every time we choose to worship God it delights Him, but it can also be an enjoyable experience for us too. It’s an amazing thing to be able to worship the Creator of the Universe and feel His pleasure when we do. God delights in our praises, and for me it’s a joyful experience to worship Him.” Rebecca thinks worship is good for us because it gets our eyes on God and off ourselves. “Everybody has a need for worship. Worship is an essential ingredient in the Christian life.”

(...) Rebecca believes worship should be natural, not forced. If you’re having trouble getting started, she suggests, “Think about His blessings and who He is. Just praise Him for His faithfulness and His love that He’s shown you. Praise Him for His creation. Look at the world around you and praise Him for it. I sometimes sing a worship song to Him.”

Some of the most amazing times in Rebecca’s life have been during worship. “I remember being in a youth conference years ago and singing song after song of beautiful choruses to God and just crying my eyes out because I was so moved. I felt God’s presence with me, and I loved Him so much that it just came flowing out of my heart.” Worship can be an awesome two-way experience.

(...) “There’s so much great worship material out there!” Rebecca says. “It just needs to be found and explored.

(...) “If there is no time to spend with God, cut something out,” Rebecca says. “Whether it’s limiting extra curricular activities, shopping trips to the mall, or conversations on the phone with friends, make that time. There are always things we can say ‘no’ to. Especially if you’re a teen.“The teen years can be some of the most self absorbed years in life,” Rebecca remembers.

(...) "One of the things that is so excellent about worship, no matter our age, is that it really gets our eyes off of ourselves and onto God. If I feel that my heart isn’t quite centered on God or I’m being distracted by something, I just pray, ‘God help me to focus on You, and help me put aside the distractions’. Worship is hugely important at every stage in life, but to keep focused on Him during the teen years is especially essential.”

(...)

So what if you think God is calling you to become a worship leader? What steps can you take? Rebecca is convinced, “The best place to start is definitely at church. Find a church where you can really worship God within the services there, where you get good teaching and really great worship time. If you don’t have much of a choice about where you go to church, talk to your pastor about having a worship band where you can sing current worship songs. Ask how you can get involved.”

She emphasizes prayer as a huge part of any ministry, but especially a ministry in worship. “Praying about your ministry is massively important,” she says. “Praying that it’s a God-thing, not a self-thing. Sometimes we think we’re doing something for God, but we’re really doing it to get ourselves on a stage. That shouldn’t be the motivation.”

Rebecca suggests, “Listen to worship CD’s, where you can worship God along with the music and experience worship in a new way. And don’t be afraid to start out with humble beginnings. Sometimes just getting 2 or 3 friends together, maybe finding somebody who can play a guitar, and just starting a little small group singing worship songs together can be great. That could lead to other opportunities later.”

Rebecca means it when she says, “I’m so glad for the worship revolution that’s happening around the world right now. People’s hunger for worship is so obvious. I hope to help that grow more and more by putting out worship songs through which people can really draw closer to God.”

2007-11-11 Plumb - new album: Blink

Plumb - Blink
Depends on where the fans are at in their own lives, and whether they follow Plumb more for her sound or the heart expressed through her songwriting. Blink is definitely softer than the modern rock of her previous efforts, but it is exactly the sort of lullaby album you could imagine her making, relying more on gentle programmed pop ambience than harps and strings. The gorgeous opener “Sweet and Lovely” is cut from the same cloth as an ethereal Sarah McLachlan ballad like “I Love You,” while the straightforward hymn covers (”Children of the Heavenly Father,” “God Will Take Care of You”) resemble material from Christmas and worship albums by Rebecca St. James and Natalie Grant.

2007-10-16 Rebecca St James family loss

Rebeccas St. James’ Family Loss at Calvary 88.5 KLJC Station Blog
Rebecca St. James and her family would appreciate your prayers this week as they go through a personal loss. Rebecca shares that her “beloved maternal grandma, Jean Francis, went to be with the Lord on Monday of this week. Lovingly known as ‘Nanna’ to the family that cherished her so dearly, she was a shining beacon for Jesus, His love, and goodness. I have flown to Australia to be with her mother and dad, David & Helen and extended family. Nanna will continue to reach the world for God’s Kingdom for many, many years through the ministry hearts she and “Pops” have so lovingly nurtured.”

Rebecca St. James Sends A Personal Note From Australia

Publish Date: Oct 15, 2007

A week ago, we received that sad news that Rebecca St. James’ maternal grandmother, Jean Francis, had passed away. Lovingly known as ‘Nanna’ to the family, Rebecca describes her as “a shining beacon for Jesus, His love, and goodness”. Over the weekend, Rebecca posted an update on her webs site:

My dear friends..

Thank you SO much for the overwhelming response of sympathy and love that you have shown to me and my family over the last few days. You have truly blessed us with your compassion and prayers. So many of you related to what we are going through right now and it definitely has made us feel united with you.

The funeral was hard, especially as it was my first, but the ‘celebration service’ afterwards was beautiful. She was an amazing woman of God and we were all proud to know her.

Thanks again for your kindness to us and may God be close to you as you walk with Him today..

With love,

Rebecca

2007-10-09 L'Abri, Rebecca St. James and homeschooling Pollywog Creek)

Pollywog Creek: L'Abri, Rebecca St. James and homeschooling
Emily and I had the opportunity to meet and interview Rebecca, as well as her very talented brother Joel, a little over a year ago. In preparation for our interview, I had read that Rebecca had recently spent six weeks studying in L'Abri, and I was particularly anxious to ask her about that experience.

(...) Rebecca is one of the most delightful young women we have met in the
Christian music industry. She is not only talented and beautiful, but
humble, gracious and mature beyond her age. The initial interview was
conducted over the phone a few days before we met her at a concert.
After brief informal introductions, it was Rebecca who offered to pray
before we began the "official" interview. Rebecca's publicist had
granted us twenty minutes to complete the interview (...)

Patricia - Rebecca, thank you so much for taking the time to let us interview you for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.
This is a huge honor for my daughter Emily and I to be interviewing one
of Christian music’s most loved, appreciated, and celebrated
artists. We both want to congratulate you on your recent Dove award
nominations for your contributions to WOW Christmas Green and Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Both of those CDs are part of our personal music collection.

Much later in the interview...

Patricia - Rebecca, I was intrigued to read about your retreat to L’Abri. Can you tell us about that experience?

Rebecca

- Yes, it was a real amazing time in my life. I went to L’Abri
just wanting to be renewed and to be refreshed knowing that I might be
filled up so I could continue to give out in ministry and I felt that
at the beginning of my trip that God promised me that time would be
like a sunrise in my life. I was praying at the beginning … I
was outside on my walk and just sort of praying and I was watching the
sunrise and felt like God was saying that a similar thing was going to
happen in my life through this trip and that is exactly what happened,
it was like a sunrise and a new day in my life spiritually. It was kind
of a time where God was just teaching me who I am in Him and teaching
me that I am loved just as I am. I felt that He was just loving on my
life, loving on my heart and just really treasuring me through that
time. The new album and the new season of ministry that has come from
that time has a lot of joy in it and shows how renewing my time with
Him was there.

(Patricia) Icannot seem to find it in my notes, and
would need to listen to the tape to know for certain, but I remember
that Rebecca also told me that her experience at L'Abri changed her
understanding of the meaning of Christian community. I grieve that I
did not have more time for her to elaborate.

(...)

The interview as it was published:

EMILY: C.S. Lewis and his writings are very popular among
homeschoolers. What was your first exposure to him, and how has he
influenced your writing and music?

REBECCA: C.S. Lewis has
influenced my life quite a lot. I’ve read a lot of his work and
really appreciate the challenges he issues. I love that he is so
honest, but so profound—aspects I want in my music and in my
writing. I want to be profoundly led by God’s Word and also very
real. I have a song on my new album called “Shadowlands”
that ties into C.S. Lewis and the movie about his life. We all go
through shadowlands where it is like we are surrounded by a fog and
don’t know what is coming next. It is a scary, fearful, and dark
time and yet God is working with us through those times where we cling
to Him. He will walk us through and back into the sun and into the new
day and the new season. Sometimes when people are in the middle of a
dark or hard time, they find it hard to see how God is going to bring
good out of it. “Shadowlands” encourages people to see the
hope in the midst of their pain and know that God is with them. I read
[the Chronicles of Narnia] as a child and again as an adult,
probably 6 or 7 years ago. I love the richness of the symbolisms
throughout, and when I wrote the song for the Chronicles of Narnia
soundtrack, I wanted some of that symbolism— to look at Aslan the
lion who is so powerful, so strong, and yet so gentle, the same as
Jesus—strong and powerful but also loving and kind, and that is
what draws us to Him.

EMILY: What motivated you to add writing books to your already very busy schedule?

REBECCA:
Writing books is something that happened quite naturally. It
wasn’t this big huge dream, but one of those things that God
opened up the doors for me and I walked through them. When I was about
18 or 19 I had an opportunity to write a devotional book. The amazing
thing is that God had already prepared my heart that that might happen.
Even though it was not a huge consuming dream to write books, it was
something that God had prepared me for and something that He contin-
ued to lead me into, so I wrote a second devotional book, and a book
about purity. SHE, a book for women, was after that, and SHE Teen. Then Sister Freaks, which I was involved [with] more on an editor level.

EMILY:
You once stated, “A big problem with our generation is that we
don’t have mentors. We surround ourselves with our peer
group.” Can you elaborate on that thought and share with us who
you consider to be your mentor(s)?

REBECCA: Yes, I think that
mentoring is a lost art. It is something that generations before us
naturally knew was important— older men and women speaking into
the lives of younger men and women, giving them wisdom they had
learned. I think that saves a lot of young people from having to learn
the hard way, but our generation seems to want to do stuff on their own
… largely because they don’t know there is a better way.
Mentoring is something that we need to recapture. As young people we
need to be asking for it, and the people in generations above us need
to be available to mentor those of us who are younger. I prayed for [a
mentor] for a while—I saw the need in my heart to have a mentor.
My parents have definitely been mentors, but there came a time in my
life when I needed wisdom outside all the wisdom they had imparted me
so that I could have even more life wisdom. God provided Evie
[Tornquist] through a friendship I built up with her. Through a series
of pretty miraculous events, He opened up the door for her and me to
have that mentoring relationship. I am on the road so much that it is
hard to be involved in meeting regularly with young girls, but there
are a couple that I do feel I am an informal mentor to, especially two
in Christian music.

PATRICIA: Does your family travel with you on tour?

REBECCA:
Yes, they come out most of the time—not all of the time, but when
we do a tour like we are on right now with BarlowGirl and Jadon Lavik.
All the family except for two brothers—three brothers, my sister,
and my parents—are all involved in different areas, from
merchandise to accounting to background vocals. They are a huge, huge
part of the team— the show couldn’t go on without them!

PATRICIA: Are your parents still homeschooling your brothers or sister?

REBECCA: Yes.

PATRICIA: How do you feel that homeschooling prepared you for adulthood?

REBECCA:
It taught me a lot about the importance of good family relationships,
and I grew in closeness to my family just spending so much time
together. I also think that spiritually I grew because the books that I
was reading were all encouraging me in my faith. [Homeschooling]
definitely allowed me to live out my calling. I was signed at 15 and my
first album came out when I was 16, so I was able to travel and do
schoolwork as well. Also, my family went through some financially hard
times when I was homeschooling, and we pulled together and prayed
together as a family, so it really enriched my life both spiritually
and relationally.

EMILY: Do you feel that you missed out on more traditional activities by being a homeschooler?

REBECCA:
My life was so different anyway. Being on the road kept me from being
involved in traditional teenage activities like hanging out with
friends, going to prom and dances … so it wasn’t really
homeschooling that kept me from things like that. You know, my brothers
and sister have really good friends from church, and my sister rides
horses, so she has friends through that. [Homeschooling] can keep you
from being able to do some things, but I think that if you are
intentional about being involved in other groups where you are meeting
people or you are involved in sports or other extracurricular
activities, you can make up for it.

EMILY: Do you have any advice for homeschooling teens?

REBECCA:
Appreciate the joys and the blessings of being homeschooled, like the
closeness to your family that you are achieving. And being able to get
done with school. Homeschooling generally takes about half the time
that you take in school. You can then devote your time in other things
like training for your future. I think often that the education is
better, but I think also that the spiritual value of what you are being
taught in the home— making sure that what you are hearing is
solid—is great, too. Just value the blessings of homeschooling.
Also, I have spoken a lot about purity and the importance of honoring
God in this area of waiting for marriage. Sometimes we think,
“I’m in a Christian community or high school, so I
don’t need to worry about that,” but there is so much
pressure on young people in this area to compromise. All of us need to
be encouraged to wait and save sex for marriage and be honoring to God
in that area. I have a book, Wait for Me, and a song I wrote
to my future husband saying that I was waiting for him and praying for
him, and that is a very important part of my message.

2007-10-15 Favorite Songs (from the Bloom weblog)

Bloom!: Favorite Songs
* "It is Well", by Rebecca St. James on her Worship God album. I don't know about you, but I love the words to that song. However, to me, the (beautiful!) traditional hymn music seemed sad (played in the minor key?), and would only remind me that the author of this song wrote it in the memory of losing all his daughters at sea. Needless to say, I kept getting sidetracked by the tragic story and could never focus on the words. And that is one reason why I love Rebbecca St. James's new upbeat rendition which still flows seamlessly with the well-known words.

* Keep looking at the Worship God CD, girls, because now we're going to check out "Quiet You with My Love." Remember waking up in a nightmare as a little girl? If you were like me, I'd usually run and get up Mom, Dad, or Katie. They would comfort me, quiet my fears with their love, and tuck me back in bed. That's the mental image that comes to mind when I hear this song - God taking us reassuringly by the hand, quieting our fears, comforting. "Lay your head down on my shoulder; be still, My child, rest awhile; and I'll quiet you with my love, rejoice over you with my song..."

* One last song from Rebecca St. James before we spin off to other artists! Ready? This one is called "You". I love it because it re-focuses the eyes of my heart on God, it reminds me that he is the one I should want to be like, and that He is the only thing that will last ("cause at the end of the age, You will remain").
