Collaborations and inspiration were the theme at the second night of showcases at GMA Music Week 2008. Christian music pioneer Michael W. Smith brought along some new friends this year for his night of Sunday worship, adding the vibrant Israel Houghton and American Idol contestant Mandisa to the lineup. Rolling out such anthems as “Shout to the Lord,” “Let It Rain,” and “Mighty to Save” the group brought a message of surrender and worship into the packed Ryman Auditorium. Guest Rebecca St. James was also on hand to preside for a special Compassion International offering, which earned over $6,000 at the night’s beginning to help purchase mosquito nets for needy African families.

Oshkosh Northwestern - Lifest seeking undiscovered talent

Lifest, the annual Christian music festival in Oshkosh, teamed up with 15 other Christian Festival Association events around the nation, and Essential Records, to put on the contest.

According to a news release, the "Lifest New Artist Search presented by Essential Records" initially will be done online, then completed in July during a live competition at Lifest. Twenty-four artists will be dubbed semi-finalists via online voting, and eight bands or artists will play two songs each during Lifest.

The artists will be judged on performance, with one winner chosen each day by a panel, and each daily winner will have a chance to play on the main stage July 12.

The Lifest grand-prize winner will open for Casting Crowns and Rebecca St. James July 12 at Lifest, and join other Christian Festival Association winners in Nashville to compete for a recording development deal with Essential Records, the release stated.

The deadline for entering the competition is May 15, with certain fees applying in addition to submitting a demo CD. Voting is open to the public, closing at midnight June 8.

Devotion by the Newsboys- I expected this to be Adoration Part 2. At first I was disappointed. But I am disappointed no more. This disc is a great hybrid of Thrive and Adoration. 3 songs are by others (Blessed be Your Name, Name Above All Names & When the Tears Fall). Their version of the Matt Redman song, Blessed be Your Name, features help by Rebecca St. James. It is spunkier than other others. Taking a cue from Job, it deals with the commitment to praise God even when life is difficult. Other songs of longing are The Orphan and Landslide of Love. They put forth a ‘real-world’ Christianity. God of Nations, Name Above All Names, and Strong Tower direct our devotion to our God. This is an encouraging and enjoyable collection of songs. There are plenty of stick-in-your head lyrics, and some kickin’ music.

I'm one of several writers working on a new book project, a book called Loved with Christian recording artist Rebecca St. James. The book is based on a song ("You Are Loved") Rebecca wrote for a friend who turned to drugs and away from the church, and will tell stories of young women who left their faith and rediscovered the love of Christ. This is a book of encouragement and hope. It says, "No matter where you've been or what you've done... you are loved."

The younger generation of Christians is embracing music with a harder edge, according to a popular magazine for Christian teens that announced in its latest issue its readers' top music choices.

13 to 18, leaned in favor of hard rock bands bumping down pop and soft
rock groups. The results are published in the April/May issue.

The trend is most evident in the award's Best Vocalist category.

Cooper of Skillet won the Best Male Vocalist – a title that
bounced between Jason Dunn (Hawk Nelson), Matt Thiessen (Relient K) and
Jeremy Camp in previous cycles of the awards. Trevor McNevan of
Thousand Foot Krutch placed second.

The Best Female Vocalist
category welcomed its first ever winner from a hard rock band: Lacey
Mosley of Flyleaf. The frontwoman beat out former holders of the title,
Tricia Brock (Superchick) and Alyssa Barlow (BarlowGirl).

The song calls on us to live lives full of Christ and His presence. We live to breath the Lord, to accept the gift of His presence in our lives.

And the Desperate for You song, by Rebecca St. James. I don't think I'll ever hear that song without thinking of a friend who sang it one Sunday; the same day he fell off the deep end into a whirlpool that cost him nearly everything he had...family, job, home...that day when he sang that song, he meant it, he was desperate - I could just hear it in his heart. I wish I could express how much I wanted to help him, but couldn't; how it hurt to see him hurting, how it hurt to see his family hurting. Even today, when I think of him, or when I hear that beautiful song, I feel such compassion for him...it brings me to tears once again...

Note: The mentioned song is not written by Rebecca St James but by Marie Barnett. But Rebecca's version is probably most remembered by a lot of Christians.

Note: apparently this blogger has mistaken this song for a Rebecca St James song. But this is not really a surprise, as the voice of Cindy Foote is quite similar to Rebecca's in a couple of ways, and the user who posted this video on youtube is nicknamed RebeccaStJamesRockz. On top of that, a girl sitting on the ground at the beginning of the video is like a perfect Rebecca-lookalike... So there are a lot of great excuses here for the mistake. By the way: when I'd heard the song, I posted it as a hot tip to Rebecca - for her planned praise album. (Rescue The Perishing isn't a praise song strictly speaking, but it is sung as such, and I guess praise could indeed mean much more than we usually understand by it).

Rebecca St. James’ 2005 album If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something is pure genius. There are very few albums that I enjoy listening to from start to finish, but this is definitely one of them — all the songs are great.

After listening to Rebecca’s aLive in Florida album (which contains live versions of many of these songs), I was a bit disappointed when I first heard the opening song “God Help Me” on this album. The bass is pretty weak when compared to the live version! There is some synthesizer bass stuff, but the electric bass just isn’t “present” in the mix. So that’s the only problem with the album — the bass track could be turned up a bit on all of the songs, in my opinion.

But that’s easily overlooked due to the awesomeness of Rebecca St. James’ singing and songwriting skills (and the hard-rocking guitar riffs that show up quite frequently).

My favorite song from this album is probably “Shadowlands.” It nicely demonstrates Rebecca’s vocal range. I also enjoy “Alive,” which has a great message about the joy that comes from giving one’s life to God.

I have been listening a lot to that song lately and it reminds me of me and T. Almost a decade of friendship and the last time since we've met. It seems that i don't feel connected to him anymore and i just feel like letting go. After listening to that song, i asked God if i should still hold on to him. I am not asking God for an opportunity to be with him just yet. At least not this year. Maybe just a chance to meet him would be a great thing this year.
